The Human Body: Ears
Ears are almost the greatest part of your body. For example: When you hear Karah screeching it immediately brings the music right to your brain. Cool, huh? Any way if you didn't have ears you would have to have loads of paper in your pocket so you could talk to each other or write to each other. But it would be kinda good because you could get better hand writing like I need to work on. Anyway you are using your ears right now as you are listening to my report. Well hopefully. This is the end. I hope you learned something. See you later.

The One About Oak Meadow
The school year is almost upon us and for the first time since I started homeschooling I feel nervous. Why? Because I'm doing something so completely different than I have ever done before as the teacher or the student. It's as close to unschooling as I'm comfortable to go & so far from the textbooks that we've used so far. I am excited and looking forward to this, but I'm also so nervous that they won't learn as much or as well as I hope they do.
We're going to use Oak Meadow (www.oakmeadow.com) The idea behind their curriculum is making learning interesting to children. To focus on what they enjoy & like and be completely integrated into every part of their learning. So much different then plopping them down at the table w/ textbooks where they have to do 2-4 pages in each book. This takes learning to the next level... lots of hands on and game playing and very literature based. I orginally got it with Nathan in mind. He is going into the 3rd grade and is most definitely a hands on learner. I thought it might make it easier for us than the daily battles we dealt with while doing A Beka. Easier, more interesting & he'll learn more if he's enjoying it.
But I'm nervous... I hope it works out ok.

The One With An Experiment
Can anyone tell what our project this week is?
Michael got this book for Christmas, so we decided to try a project from it for this weeks science experiment.

The One About Being Busy
I was able to counteract the mastitis I felt coming on with a mixture of echinacea, vit C, water & rest. Woohooo!! I'm so glad I skipped having that again.
The kids have a busy/full fall coming up. They are doing 3rd, 2nd & 1st grade this year. They are in a local homeschool group and have lots of fun classes and field trips on Friday. They are in piano lessons on Tuesdays and Royal Rangers/Mpact Girls on Tuesday evenings. It sounds like a very full fall schedule!! I'd like to add a sport in there, but I'm pretty sure there is no extra time with all that, chores, & being a kid. :) All very important... especially w/ us in the process of selling & hopefully moving soon. Erich is even doing the homeschool group and Royal Rangers. He's not doing piano lessons or much schooling... he is only 3!
I also have a full schedule... not only am I overseeing all that the kids are doing, I teach in the homeschool group. I also started midwifery school & am really the person behind making sure the house is in tip top shape 99% of the time. Yah... busy life, but I'm realizing that I enjoy this kind of business much more than boredom. I'm sure once the winter hits things will settle down a bit....

The 100th Post!
I don't have any deep insights or amazing stories to tell for my 100th post... but I thought I'd mention it was #100 anyway :)
The children got to learn about spiders and how they catch, trap and eat flies first hand tonight. I was sitting on the living room floor feeding Alyssa when I heard a fly that wouldn't stop buzzing. Beth came over and looked and said "Oh... there's a fly sitting on a white thing on the spider web." Well, that started a frenzy of kids running to see what was going on. So I explained how the spider web works and how the spider was saving the fly for later so she could eat it. IT was interesting to see the spider pull the fly all the way to the top of the web, just out of sight when she was done spinning. I had never seen that before....
We've been at VBS Sun, Mon & Tues of this week. The children learned so much and my heart soars as I hear them praise the Lord with the songs they learned. I love to hear them talk about how "awesome God is" and the amazing things He does. I love to hear them say how He helps them on a day to day basis, even when they are sad or upset about something. <3 I love it when a church or people outside of our immediate little family reinforce the things we try to teach them here at home. <3
School is just around the corner!! Truly, for a homeschooler, school is never really done or starting... it just is. We've continued w/ reading throughout the summer and have gotten educational math books out of the library... we learned about science by watching the spider or taking nature walks... school is so much more than book learning and all the homeschoolers I know understand this and take full adventage of all learning possibilities. BUT... School/School is just around the corner. I have all but 2 of my books... I just had to log them now. I'm planning to even do some preschool stuff with Sammy (who just turned 3). He's a bright boy and I think he could at least learn to write his name... :) He knows shapes and colors already, so I guess we'll go a bit beyond that.
Alyssa is calling... is about that time of evening. She wants me to snuggle her down for the night. :)

The One With School, Housework & Life
Today is another rough day. What is up with this week? I'm exhausted... and spent. I'm not sure now if it's ME or the children. I'm just spent & desperately needing some air.
I'm attempting to keep up on the housework, but I'm amazed at how quickly it seems to be piling up these days. I get the dishes done and then cook lunch and do the dishes, then cook dinner and do the dishes, then eat dinner and do the dishes.... and then there's laundry, toy clean up, sweeping (2-3x/day!) and no time for vacuuming, dusting, window washing... eek! I love walking into the kitchen and have it sparkling... but it doesn't stay that way for long.
Levi finished his math for the year today!!!! I'm so proud of him. He saw that he "only" had 10 pages left, so he plugged away and got them all day. I'm shocked... he did great!
James is almost done math... and pretty soon all we'll have left is science & history. The easy stuff. I'm so excited about that.

The One About Curriculum
As much as I like the idea of having a little more freedom in learning I have to have a curriculum for my family. I'm just not organized enough to put together everything that they all need and still ahve time to get the other things I need to get done done. ANYWAY... we had great success with A Beka this year so I decided to go ahead and look into it again for this year. I found that, as a homeschooler, if I ordered next years book this month I'd get FREE shipping! YAY! I don't have time to make it to one of their book viewings. So I calculated everything up, looked on ebay and found almost nothing so I decided to go ahead and order the book. I got all the school books I need for all 3 of the olders (1, 2 and 3 grades) for less than $300!! That included an art book for each of them just for fun. I'm super excited about it! And the nice thing is... they are ordered. They are paid for and I don' t have to stress about it!!! Yay!

Another Random One
I got a new pair of heels and feel like a whole new woman. I haven't bought heels since my wedding 9 years ago.... and those were 'wear only once for the wedding' shoes.
I found the joy of belts. I'm loosing weight and while my larger size jeans fall down, my next size down leave a little muffin top, which I hate. So I started wearing a belt on my larger size jeans. They don't fall down that way, but also don't leave that icky 'muffin top'.
I'm tired of friends who only want to be friends when it's convienient for them. :/ Wondering if I can change that some how... or would it be better to continue to live in my own little world and cut ties w/ people on the outside. OR... do I just let it continue to be what it is. That's what I usually do. Let the other dictate how the friendship will run it's course. Blech.
I'm super excited that Matt & I have a WHOLE weekend to ourselves soon!! Yay!! We'll be celebrating our 9th anniversary!!
I'm super excited that if all stays on schedule we will be DONE school by mid-end of April!!! WOOHOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How's that for randomness. :D

The One About Productive Days & School Stuff
I love days like this. School was done by 9:05, dishes done, laundry in process, dinner planned, 2 of the children's chores are done and one is working on his. 2 children bathed... and it's only 10 am!! Gotta love it!
Alyssa is napping peacefully right now. She has been doing better at night... I just had to move her out of my bed... she now sleeps for 2-3 hr stretches rather than 45-90 MINUTE stretches. I am hopeful that it will just get better and better. :)
MAJOR breakthrough in school today. James said, " Mom, reading doesn't really seem like school work to me. It's just something you do." YAY!!!!!!! That's HUGE coming from the child who fought and fought w/ me about learning to read earlier in the year.
